It took a little wrangling since we didnt have an appointment, but we managed to blag our way into the backroom
where Sony had three genuine
consoles on
display. Click on for a bunch more pics.
Note that the controller is just a Conceptual Design.

did you get to hold the controller? what does it feel like (besides the obligatory bananna)?
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:14 PM ET by dt
good thing the controller is "conceptual". Because it looks like it needs a bit of work, to put it mildly.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:14 PM ET by Ken
I'm a bit suprised Sony went away from the "media dongle" model and added outputs for so many platforms right on the box. I think this could be an area where MS needs to rethink their approach, and perhaps toss an HDMI output as standard.

i really really really like the design of the console. would be great if they took the bubble off the top, so that it'd stack better.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:15 PM ET by andrwe
and to think they said the 360 looked bad
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:16 PM ET by Scott
Still looks like a laminator. And I still hope the ergonomics of the controller is better in hand than how it looks.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:17 PM ET by That Guy
Is it just me, or does this thing look bigger than the original Xbox? And, that controller... sweet jesus.

Cool shots, i like the design
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:18 PM ET by
yeah, I like it, but it shoudl stack better and the controller needs some work, but that is what E3 is for, gives Sony a chance to hear what people think and make changes.

wow, and integrated power supply. no more brick! the glossy black one looks hot. it'll match my revolution

God, that's huge. How is that thing supposed to fit into an entertainment sytem? It really, really, really looks like something made by Kenmore. Does it make ice cubes?

It may suprise some of you, but i actually own a controller very similar to teh ps3 one. Its for the first playstation and made by madcatz. It may look awkward because were not used to seeing that shape, but i find it extremely comfortable to use. Im sure the decision was made by more than a few ppl at sony. If my controller had dual force analog, Ild use it over the ps2 controllers.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:21 PM ET by Chris
People worry way too much about "stacking". I got an idea... get a shelf. Or put the PS3 on top of your stack of expensive components.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:22 PM ET by
I don't know about you, but that thing is worthy of gracing my coffee table in front of the TV.I am also hoping that final controller looks nothing like that. I can't imagine trying to press the L/R buttons.I'm hoping the specs are as good as they sound though, because numbers don't mean much. Then again, cosmetics don't either. I'm willing to be that 80% loyal Playstation customers would still buy the console if it came in a dreamcast shell... maybe even a cardboard box.

Ken said:"I'm a bit suprised Sony went away from the "media dongle" model and added outputs for so many platforms right on the box."They still have the media dongle. If you look at the back of the PS3 there's a A/V MultiOut port that will obviously be used to support composite and component outs. I'm still blown away by the use of two HDMI ports. It sounds great but I know I'll never use it.

How can you say it's huge without any reference to anything else in the picture? It's impossible to say how big it is exactly. If I were to guess it looks about as tall as the original PS2 (when laying down) and it's width and depth look about the same as a DVD player.I think it looks a lot better in these shots than I originally thought. The controller on the other hand looks even worse, I didn't think that was possible.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:30 PM ET by Will
I think the controller would be comfortable, the buttons dont seem too far apart. People need too get over themselfs and stop fearing the unknown. Don't knock something till you have actually used it.As for people bashing the console designs, if you morons used logic, you would know that Sony has a pretty good design considering the amount of room needed for the hardware. Would you rather have a Tower PC case in ur living room? Common now, you cant have a book shaped Multi Core Machine.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:30 PM ET by dynamius
hey look, they took a hint from microsoft and designed the buttons like the xbox controller's clear design. i think it looks cooler...
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:32 PM ET by dynamius
ok... the 4 usb ports in the front? that's gotta be the most inconvenient location to put them. they need to work on that.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:32 PM ET by Jacob
I wanna see what's under that flap on the front. (Memory ports, etc.)Too bad you couldn't convince someone to lift it up.Anyway, the Spider-Man font has GOT to go.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:33 PM ET by
Whats the slot on the side/bottom of the console in the 4th last picture?
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:34 PM ET by sh4d0w
Have to say the console shape looks much better than the previous days shots show. The paint job on the black version looks great.

God I want to throw that boomarag at someone. Maybe it is a deturent for playing with people you dont like...
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:41 PM ET by jag
Nice, very nice. I am on the list . The only problem that I see, besides the dorky controlers, is that you can't stack something on top. Hope someone come out with some kind of adaptor for that. Or the PS3 plays always on top?
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:45 PM ET by KeG
Fugly console, mind-bogglingly stupid looking controller. But I'll get it anyway.. *sigh*
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:46 PM ET by Mustanir
I'm obviously one of few, but I actually like that controller design. Looks like it'd be quite comfy and it isn't as bulktastic as some controllers we've seen....
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:46 PM ET by elliot
maybe it looks like a laminator because it gets crazy hot like a laminator, and thus, you shouldn't put anything on top of/ next to it.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:50 PM ET by
Am I the only person who looks at the thing and thinks "Man, they stole the font from the Spiderman movies!" in here?
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:51 PM ET by Ed
If only there was some sort of concave box to stack on top of it...

spider-man font should go, the console looks pretty sexy.i've thought a LOT about the controller and at this point i hope they keep it.think about the N64 controller, didn't you think it looked goofy as hell when you first saw it? but then didn't you like it?i've said it before, i'll say it again.. that PS3 controller design will be the most comfortable thing you've ever played with.
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:54 PM ET by The Bos
i actually like the controller. it fits the console perfectly and it looks like it'll be comfortable. can't wait, Nintendo and XBOX will soon be the next SEGA!!!!!
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:54 PM ET by Handsome Jon
What are you guys talking about? the xbox360 will stack on top of the PS3 perfectly! (although one of them will have to face to the side ;~)
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:55 PM ET by
And my big question...will it accept UMD's so I can play my PSP games on it? Maybe that's been answered somewhere and I missed it?

It looks like a CAR DOOR and a DOUBLE ENDED DILDO!!! I will buy the 360
Posted May 19, 2005, 4:58 PM ET by mcloki
Who cares what it looks like. It's what it plays like that counts. 7 ports for wireless sound great. Hook up wireless headphones and extra controllers. The HDMI ports are awesome additions. Every HDTV set will have them. And if Sony adds a downloadable movie store to the mix, that would be great. The possibilities are just great. And the graphics are just kicking butt right now. The Vision Gran Turismo demo is a straight use of GT4 models. The spectators look low rezish, like GT4, but man do the cars and tracks look sweet. To all the fanboys cracking wise about the fridge and ice cube references. The horse you're beating is dead. Let it go man.

Actually I looks more like a BOSE sound system I've seen..

Take a look at a pic I took with my PSP. The PS3 is not large at all and looks a lot better in real life than in pictures.
Posted May 19, 2005, 5:00 PM ET by Rocket Punch
First of all, thx for the picts.I can see how SONY has already won the first round of the fight, when all people in various forums are commenting on how their controller looks and how the case is bad.I don't know how people play their games, but when I play? I look at the screen not the console. With Bluetooth wireless controller and the ability to add additional wireless device to the PS3, I don't really care if it looks like one of Mr. McDonald's shoe. If you don't like it, put it under your bed, your sofa, under the table, lock it in the safe!! you can still play. All I care is content! content! content!! and for that the PS3 sure looks promising

Aren't you stunned by how cold this design looks? It really does look like a car door. Exactly. Wow, I would've thought the PS3 would look incredibly cool, but it looks incredibly blah. And yeah... it's huge.

#30 ToeTagR :you are a damn moron if you are making your decision based on cosmetics alone. but i guess someone as stupid as you shouldn't be aloud to touch the PlayStation 3 anyway.

#30 If you like to look at your console and Xbox360 is perfect for you, cause you won't be having fun playing it.....and I thought this board is restricted for 13 years old and up. I am sooo wrong.

VIDEO GAMES ARE FINISHED. whats wrong with you poeple? Dont you know how to invent new software anymore? do I have to spell it out 4 u. What r we buyen, toys now? Please, just sell us the (CPU and the board-call it PS3) and we will handle the rest. Or is that too much to ask? Are you finished exploiting the poor and ignorant yet? better yet dont make a system at all!!!!!!!!!!. just deliver games, oh i forgot you dont do that no more. BECAUSE WE THE PEOPLE. know how to get what we want and we dont need a shinny (fake picture anyway) console.
Posted May 19, 2005, 5:08 PM ET by Jeremiah
I think people are just hypocritical when it comes to most systems. When people said they didnt like the way PS2 looked back when it came out now everyone that owns a PS2 bascially changed they're mind I'm predicting the same thing for PS3.In my last words jelly beans. cow.

The port on the seventh picture is likely to be the hard drive bay.And about that controller. Sony has yet again did the same horrible flaw which has followed them since the first dual shock. Where does you left tummy go when you just pick the controller? On the d-pad! The natural place of tummy on a PS controller is on the d-pad and on the analog stick which is the main controlling device nowadays. When you move your finger on the analog sticks you loose some precicion in movements and at least I feel it unbearably uncomfortable to position my tummies such way. They should put the left analog stick where the d-pad lies and move the d-pad somewhere else (or even completely remove).

All you people saying the looks shouldn't matter were bashing the XBOX360 as ugly. Now Sony releases their system in a Lexmark printer case and it is sexy? Fanboys. I plan to buy both. My Xbox was hidden away and came out when I wanted to play cause it was ugly. The PS2 was allowed to stay out (it was ugly too, but less obtrusive). Next Gen, my 360 will grace my entertainment center, the PS3 will be hidden (if I can find a big enough hiding spot for it, the thing is larger than the 360 in every dimension. Check out IGN's comparison for dimensions) til it is time to play. And the controller change is dumb... period. There is no way you could easily use the shoulder buttons like before. Take the PS2 controller, increase the handles a bit and thicken then to hold the electronics and make them more comfortable for adult hands and you are golden. Ok, you want it futuristic to compliment the Lost in Space looking console, keep that controller, but don't make it flat, curve the hands grips down at an angle (like the small handles on the PS2) so you can have your index and middle fingers on the shoulder buttons. That is what made the PS2 controller great.
Posted May 19, 2005, 5:18 PM ET by Kev
The PS3 doesn't play UMD's. Why would you want to, thats what the PSP is for! I think the machine is awesome in terms of graphics. I don't really care what it looks like to be honest, allthough i think it is very nice. Most of the talk is about how it looks, not about the Getaway demo, or the tech demo's like the Doc Oc face, both of which where stunning!!
Posted May 19, 2005, 5:18 PM ET by
The Playstation 3 is NOT big. The width of it is two PSPs next to each other and believe or not looks stunning in real life. Just like the PSP, pictures don't do it justice.

Most people expected Sony to win round one. What people did not expect was how well Microsoft did. C'mon, it would be pretty shocking if Sony had disappointed at E3 given their dominance in the marketplace and the enormity of their corporate presence in the world. But what shocked me was how together MS was. When I looked at the 360 and all those gorgeous face-plates and "Gears of War" and etc., I was truly impressed. I think Microsoft out-designed Sony which I never in a million years would have thought possibly before E3. And they really have their shit together with XBL which I think is far more important to the future of gaming than many seem to. MS did lots better than anyone expected. What this means is that MS has a real chance to do very well. Will they catch up to Sony? Not likely. But they could take a huge chunk out of Sony's market. So, Sony DESPERATELY had to do well at E3. I think they did ok, not great, especially given their using pre-rendered clips, a disappointing fact that is not lost on hardcore gamers. I should let you know that I plan to buy both systems, so I'm not fanboy-ing. For me, instead of Sony winning round one, it was a split-decision.

I'm going to stick the controller in my ass. I hope it vibrates. I want a 360. My roommate can buy this thing.

actually the reason why people are talking about looks is because that's pretty much there is to talk about... there was a major lack of games in their presentation except for conceptual art and what not mentioning that their top titles will eventually make it to ps3... where was the gameplay? they spent most of their time glorifying their hardware. microsoft's presentation consisted of everything from hardware, actual games, multimedia functions, online...

IT is huge"a"normus. I'm not going to go dig up the link. But over at IGN.com a article in E3 News section 360vsPS3 has all the specs of the two including dimensions and the PS3 is much bigger. LONGER, WIDTHer, DEEPER, SEXYer...oh wait um, yeah it's bigger. Go look up the specs if ya want.

The PS3 looks sweet. Both xbox360 and PS3 are going to be amazing! Cant wait till there both out. The Xbox360 controler looks alot better but you never know the PS3 controler might fit really good... (guessing not though).. everyone says the spider-man font has to go, sony stole the spider-man font. do you notice the offical spider-man webpage is sonypictures thats right. Witch would mean Sony probaly has full rights to the font. Both PS3 and Xbox360 are going to be great you fanboys out there shouldent be talking. I own both a xbox and ps2 and love them. Long as both systems have good games they both will do well.

I think the design is inspired and will fit very nicely next to my Bose Lifestyle system.Oh, hang on. I think I just found where the design was inspired from. If the front on the Bose unit was silver and not black they would be almost identical!!!I have to say from the specs and the available screenshots it looks like the PS3 is going to be king. I think the real tell will be the integration with the portable players, if they get it right then it will almost definitely leave the Xbox out in the cold.

I was at E3 and after their presentation, they have the Playstation 3 out in a glass display. I figure people might be interested in how big it is compare to other items because they keep critizing on the size of it. The Playstation is beautiful. Pictures just doesn't capture how smooth and glossy it looks. That's why people are saying it looks like an appliance. In my opinion, PS3 won already cause the presentation of games was jaw dropping. You know those movies of games for the PS3, it's not pre rendered. That's the actually game! You would know if you saw the presentation because you see the actual games in action.

#29: I read somewhere that the PS3 will accept UMD discs, but I don't know if you'll be able to/ really want to play PSP games on the PS3.

To me it kinda looks like a scanner. You know, like you lift up the top lid and place your paper in it.Anyway, I'm sure that niether the PS3 or the 360 should be 'stacked'. These things will need some space to keep cool.Even thought it looks craptacular I'm sure they will sell hundreds of them anyway! :) -- joke.
Posted May 19, 2005, 5:41 PM ET by Awesom-o
Yeah. Obviously both of them are gonna be amazing, I think. We have an XBOX and a PS2 here in this house. Only the Xbox gets any use at all anymore. The PS2 seems like a relic compared to it. The graphics, the gameplay, everything about the PS2 is just so far behind the Xbox in my opinion.Obviously, these new consoles will change everything, and will add some insane shit to gaming. Sony really needs to try and compete with Xbox Live in my opinion though. Xbox live is awesome right now, and it's just going to get better. For Sony's sake, I hope they do something.

Funny how the Xbox 360 is Concave, and the PS3 is convex (in case apperance), maybe we can stack them together - that would be nice, so nice that a hardware developer would never dream it, let alone do it. I think I'll just buy both!

not only did sony copy the spiderman 2 logo and make a console out of a scanner, but they seemed to have taped 2 bananas together, spray painted them, and added buttons and there you have the ps3 controller, I'm going with the xbox 360.

Just something to ponder. The 360 is concave and the ps3 is convex(got a dome) they'll stack great together. Weird, I think so. Eh just something to think about.

i measured the PS logo on my ps2 and got abt. 1 cm, which is 12px on a certain photo. the total length of the ps3 is abt. 390 px, 390/12=32.5cm, which is abt. 1'. so the ps3 will be about one foot longthey might have already posted the official size specs, though

I think Sony's industrial designers are going to catch a lot of hell when E3 is over. The majority of comments about the PS3 are complaints i.e. rifrigerator, spiderman font, and didlo controller. I bet by spring 2006 the PS3 will look totally different.
Posted May 19, 2005, 7:19 PM ET by PS3
Many says that the PS3 has a crappy design but the PS3 has a design that matches a B&O design, take a look here what I mean with that:I actually like the design, so I go for PS3.
Posted May 19, 2005, 7:19 PM ET by RP
This is how Sony and Microsoft are smart, Sony more than Microsoft. By creating a flat bottom and a convex top, they force you to keep the PS3 on top of your DVD Player, VCR, DVR, audio unit, Cable box, etc., in a spot that will make it noticable to all. The XBOX 360 has to be kept seperate from all the others because of its double concave design. Though this might cause it to end up standing on the floor next to your big stack of units. Though the stand for it causes the look of the concave-ness to sort of "rise" from the ground. Very sexy and will attract attention and those concerned about aesthetics.Do you think Sony and Microoft planned this? Had a Rock-Paper-scissors-Shoot game to find out who gets to choose if their console whould be concave or convex?
Posted May 19, 2005, 8:13 PM ET by
Hey guys,Seriously, unless you are at E3 looking at the Playstation 3 two feet away, you really don't have a clue of how the Playstation 3 really looks like. The machine is awesome looking. The controller also looks a lot better in real life. I had the same bad impression of the PS3 prior to seeing it in real life. But after seeing it up close, my impression of it has completely changed. And if you were lucky enough to check out the game presentation your jaw would drop because it is truly amazing. Sony seriously jumped a whole generation on graphics. The graphics on PS3 should look like the X360 but instead looks like the generation after it. They should just call it Playstation4.If you have a PSP, take it out. Look at my pics and then look at your PSP. The PS3 is not big at all, it is probably the same size as a PS2. Take a look at the picture with the PSP next to it and see for yourself if you don't believe me.

Then again, who gives a *!$# what the price is.I think this box will sell quite a few 'HD' TV's in the future.Stu

Man this thing looks awesome!! the controller is a little wierd but hey look at the original XBox controller, it sucked but people still bought the system. I will without a doubt be getting XBox360 AND the PS3. the 360 is awesome cuz of the online service, and the PS3 is awesome cuz of graphics. OMG that Killzone thing looked sweet as hell!! and YES is was real-time in game, and to think, it is just the alpha console running at not even half the power!! I will be getting Gears of War, Ghost Recon 3, and Perfect Dark Zero for the 360, DEFINITELY Killzone for PS3, and most likely The Getaway and Possession. PS3 has great graphics, XBox360 has good connectivity and I especially like the idea of an online gaming community.

#76 said: "and YES is (killzone 2) was real-time in game"No, it wasn't!!!!! It was a heavily-scripted event put on by Sony. It was a pre-rendered clip. Man, you guys are naive.

I love all this stuff you guys have written about ps3 and cant stop laughing at coments like a lexmark scanner, and car door etc... The ps3 looks like a 1960s convection heater, and the convex shape has probably been chosen so you can cook your food healthier as you play, the grease and fat run and drip off the side, onto your dvd player and vcr`s. Ive seen one for real and its huge so im going to buy a hummer to pick it up from the store, it will be handy with the convex shape for keeping my feet warm on the winter evenings. The controller looks like a crossiant, but let me assure you a crossiant looks and tastes better. WHAT IS VITAL IS GAME CONTENT, I WILL BUY ANY CONSOLE IF THE GAMES ARE GOOD, finally, I will never trust sonys hype ever again after the ps2 hype, and the spiderman font is DISGUSTING, how could the use it? I am amazed!!! I hope it plays better than it looks.

Let's cover some basics:- Sony put out Spider-Man so I guess they feel they can use the font... I don't agree with the choice but it wasn't 'STOLEN.'- If you don't like the controller, maybe, just maybe, a 3rd-party controller will be an option for you to buy, you cranky dorks.- this is a good-looking device, and yes, better looking than the 360. That of course can be left to one's own judgement, but as a designer I can tell you that the xBox360 is OK looking, if you like PC cases from Alienware or some BS like that. I like the nice touches but the 'inhaling' story is just not working for me.And the vertical/horizontal business from both companies? I have to say I'm still at odds with what Sony started on the PS2: A DVD/CD tray is meant to be horizontal, and all of the little nibs you add on the tray to hold a disc while you try to make it stay in place during a vertical insertion won't change that fact. So, for myself, the PS3 wins as the XBox 360 doesn't look as good horizontal, or vertical: the 360 can't make up it's mind - vertical? Sure, but the loading is awkward... Horizontal? OK, but the thing still looks funny, in fact, it looks like the bottom end is wider than the top, so will it even be level? Maybe. Power button sideways... Maybe you can turn it sideways like the 'sony' logo on the PS2...But the most important thing is that none of this matters. Like someone above concisely put it, I don't look at the thing while I play.I can't believe when I read someone posting they won't buy something because of the way it looks... You sound like an idiot and if that were really true, why do you even come to a niche blog site like Joystiq? You ain't a true gamer if you avoid buying one of these boxes based on your uninformed opinion of 'looks.' The O.G. Xbox is terrible looking... But most of us still enjoy playing it.No matter which one I consider ugly or beautiful, I'm buying both. No question about it. Both will have brutal games and incredible graphics, hopefully incredible gameplay to match. That's what we really care about, right?

#76 I love your comments and if you manage to score some whatever sony is smoking will you give me some?
Posted May 19, 2005, 10:04 PM ET by Ben
I don't see why everyone has all these bad things to say about the looks of it...I think the Xbox 360 is what complete crap looks like... the PS3 is gonna look dam good live I'm sure. As well, it'll perform twice as good as the Xbox 360. So what's the problem?

Wow 81 and 76 are tards. The controller is a prototype (not final) and the console is better looking than nintendo's oversized SD card (AKA Revolution). just incase your a nintendo fan boy, which i bet your are

for those wondering about the dimensions, i compared the power plug in the picture and managed to estimate the height standing up to be something like 45cm and the height lying down to be about 7cm. also, from what i've heard about cell processors, those things can run pretty hot. how loud will this thing be, considering they'll have to air-cool the unit?

Some people have made their own measurements.Well, here's mine, in Nintendo-approved "DVD cases". :)About 9 DVD cases in a 3x3 array.Check out the drive slot, it has to be roughly the size of a DVD, right? The console should be 2-3 DVD cases thick and 3-4 DVD cases tall.mistery solved.

So was this an empty box or what?Show us the guts - no guts, no glory. At least Microsoft had a working product there!I can think of some intriguing uses for the Sony Banana.

I must admit seeing the PS3 in this "light" (All that sheen looks way sexy) has changed my opinion on how it looks. The controller still looks weird, but if comfortable then I don't care. To all you people going on about "Stacking" ARE YOU MAD?? why would you want to bury this under a pile of amps, CD players etc!!?? I'm quite proud to admit I was the one person in the whole world who bought a PS2 Vertical stand and disply my PS2 on its own on a seperate unit (And even at a 45 degree angle so the logo can be read... sad, I know) ;)My only definate gripe is that I think the L2/R2 butons should be changed to Analogue (Gas/Brake style) Buttons like on Dreamcast and XboX pads, or go one better and copy GC pads (Analogue, with a second digital button underneath that is pressed when threshold is reached). Something I hope for is a QUIET running system too. Looks like the cooling fan (If any) will be placed in the right side of the machine (The top if placed vertically). PLEASE put a good quality low noise fan in there with thermal control Sony, I don't mind paying an extra $10 just for that.I'm warming to that PS3 design!!! I wish Sony would make a shiny Silver PSP to match the Sliver PS3........

Hmm, I think this is something Sony And MS should have collaborated on to knock nintendo out of the market. One should have a convex box and one should have a concave box... So those two stack on top of each other and generally go well together. all the people who worry about looks out there would never buy a revolution because it just wouldn't go well with their other two new consoles :P

I don't really know what to say about this new design. They've made the PS2 smaller than it was before. I mean, couldn't they make this one smaller too? It saves time so that in the future they don't have to waste any more time to make new design of a newer and smaller looking PS3. Other than that, the controller looks a bit off. Did I say 'a bit'? I meant WAY OFF!

All of you motherluverz complaining about the controller are killing me. How many of you complain about the shape of steering wheel in your car? Can't u see this controller has the same feel? DAMN PEOPLE it's just have a freakin steering wheel!
Posted May 20, 2005, 9:06 AM ET by Portach King
"i really really really like the design of the console. would be great if they took the bubble off the top, so that it'd stack better"It would stack perfectly with the 360.

BUY AMERICAN - BUY XBOX360

I like the overall design of the console, not so much the controller though. I also think the console is also a conceptual design by the fact it looks like they basically reused the PS2 design with a few simple modifications. I seriously don't expect it to look anything like this when it actually comes out. Though, no matter what it looks like I will still end up buying it because I'm a consumer whore... *cries over his empty bank account*

who else besides me is excited about the slot instead of disc tray?
Posted May 20, 2005, 2:17 PM ET by Martin
The design looks okay. The controller needs work - it looks like the Batarang in the 1st batman with Michael Keaton - just set it and forget it! The one thing that I'm surprised about is that none of their focus groups brought up the power switch on the back panel being a pain, or that enough people complained about it being there on the PS2. Hell, they even came out with an 'accessory' for the PS2 to allow you to access the switch from the front (a piece of plastic for about $20.00 - maybe that's the answer to the whole question. Hmm...).

I hadn't seen the PS3 in that light before. This is a seriously well made piece of playstation.Whatever it is designed to, I doubt it will retain the exact mould in mid-2006.The controllers I don't like-- but that's just personal taste isn't it? I mean, so what? But I do like it. Not a lot. But I like it... it's just so..."MySteRiOuS"

I wonder how much Sony plans to charge for it?
Posted May 20, 2005, 3:24 PM ET by leblanchomme
ok this batarang mierda is getting old alright, the controller looks very modern, very comfortable, my hands are big and the handles on the ps2 controller where getting annoying. the indutrial design looks good, it does not look like an overambitious, cartoonish design like xbox360's

At least they got rid of those trays that hold the disks, I always wondered why cars could have the 'feeding' disk in their head units and home electronics could not...

Its hard to believe how many people were bashing the way the 360 looks but dont say shit about this ugly thing. looks stupid

I find it interesting, but not surprising, that the most vocal critics of Sony's industrial design are Xbox users. Go figure. If you were planning on buying that uninspired, boring, dull piece of kit I wouldn't expect you to have any sense for real design.Let me guess, the iPod looks like a pack of cigarettes?
Posted May 20, 2005, 7:02 PM ET by Joey Geraci
The size of this thing has been known for several days now from a comparison on gamespot, and they confirmed that this thing is significantly bigger than the original xbox. The controller looks ridiculus, and the people that are defending it reveal their stupidity. As far as the design of the two consoles (ignoring the ginormous size of the ps3), I think they both look pretty nice. There are aspects of the xbox design that I like better, (the curves, the color and the "ring of light"), and there are aspects of the ps3 that look nice (I like the font, and the slot load is sweet). Overall, games are what people care about, and Sony is definitely lacking in showing us what their console will be able to produce (it has been long proven by now that the killzone pics were produced by an animation and 3d studio), while the xbox has shown some amazing stuff that at least has not been proven yet to have been not ingame.
Posted May 20, 2005, 7:04 PM ET by Joey Geraci
Do you have even the slightest bit of evidence that the majority of the people criticizing the ps3's design are xbox users? God where some of these ideas come from are beyond me.
Posted May 20, 2005, 8:01 PM ET by leblanchomme
why are people bashing the size? what the hell are you going to do with it go sky diving? get over it, the controller looks like a sidewinder for the pc.
Posted May 21, 2005, 6:53 AM ET by
I still don't get the controller for the PS3....to me it looks like two dicks with the analog sticks making the ballsack...

Black is the colour to go, it's more slimming, and tones down those massive curves

if you have an ipod buy white, if you have a silver surround sound set buy silver, if you have a psp, buy black.
