Revolution To Make True Debut At Space World?

Please take our . Revolution to make true debut at Space World? Posted May 20, 2005, 1:32 PM ET by James Ransom-Wiley Related entries: ,

According to Nintendo VP of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, the real Revolution will debut before E3 2006. In the past, Nintendo has hosted Space World as a platform to unveil new hardware and software. Traditionally, these events have been held in August, and that a new Space World is under consideration.

Most curious of all, of course, is the mysterious controller. Presumably, the device will be capable of handling all past Nintendo system controls. Wouldnt it be cool if it turned out to be a transformer? Has that ever been done before?

I heard mention of touchscreen controllers. which would explain being able to emulate every interface, but would suck in having feedback upon pressing a "button". Posted May 20, 2005, 2:24 PM ET by Eric Pobirs

One system that never really made it had a transforming controller as big part of its sales pitch. Posted May 20, 2005, 2:34 PM ET by Eric Pobirs

This speculation is largely for nothing. The only controller from an earlier Nintendo system that cannot be mapped directly tot he Gamecube controller is the N64 design for lack of two buttons. Where the N64 had 4 'camera' buttons the GameCube uses its second analog stick. A Revolution controller with six face buttons that otherwise looked like a GameCube controller would cover the entire history. It would be unsatisfactory to many but that is why a third party controller market exists. Someone would probably produce very quickly a wireless module with plugs for NES, SNES, and N64 controllers, allowing those with them on hand or at local retailers to use the real thing. THere is probably some guy in Taiwan ready to start work on this within minutes of getting the Revolution controller spec and have a working prototype within 72 hours, then advertised for sale on Lik-Sang a couple weeks later. Doesn't the REV have GC controller ports on it anyway? under the flap on the side/top? Posted May 20, 2005, 3:56 PM ET by Sergio

If not Space World, perhaps the Tokyo Game Show in September. However, Nintendo usually shuns TGS in favor of their own Space World.Either way, I figured that they would show more of their hand later this year when they didn't at E3. Posted May 20, 2005, 4:17 PM ET by aaron

When you think about it its a good plan Nintendo can get everyone hyped for the Nintendo revolution right before the Xbox 360 comes out. This will in there plan limit Xbox 360 sales. If they do it right it would be great. Posted May 20, 2005, 4:40 PM ET by Justin

#6, what do you mean you can't map the N64 controller to the GameCube's? The C-Stick can easily be used as if it were 4 buttons. The only realy difference is that on the N64 the L shoulder button was rarely used, as it is near the D-pad that was also rarely used, and on the Cube, the Z is no longer under the Control stick. Just swap the Z and L button mapping and you get a trigger under the Control stick again.N64: Control stick, D-pad, A, B, L, R, X, Y, Z, C x4GC: Control stick, D-pad, A, B, L, R, X, Y, Z, C-stick (C x8, with the added bonus of being proportional/analog) Posted May 20, 2005, 5:09 PM ET by Revo-Control

I think that the controller will look like a Tapwave Zodiac Pda, but the revolutionary thing about it is that the screen will somehow be able to "transform" its surface, so that "real buttons" will come out from it. If you are playing a NES game, the NES controller buttons will raise from the surface, ala Terminator 2. Posted May 20, 2005, 5:43 PM ET by GamerHeaven

I just can't see the controller being a touch screen (in fact it will not be one), and at the same time I can't understand why people could think it is.I mean it's the big close garded secret, the one they don't want competition to steal, and the DS has been on the market for 6 or so months - logic tells us that the controller is not a touch screen, 'nuff said.Besides as much as I like the idea, and love the DS, it isn't a mainstream interface - as the userbase tell us, it appeals to Hardcore gamers and the new market of "non-gamers". Sony wouldn't have the balls to "risk" something cool like that anyway - they have a huge market of people that like familiar things. Hence the poorly delivered analogue nub.I have no idea what will be so revolutionary about the controller (and the "Revolution" is more than just the controller - think the big picture people). Hopefully spaceworld or something happens this year, but I've got a stack of Cube, DS and PS2 games to wait for this year and next - frankly I can easily wait. Actually I'd prefer to wait! Though Revo-Control does have a good bit of speculation, something that would be considered a good and secret worthy idea. And it would even be more mainstream than a regular controller as it would be customisable, no idea how/if it could work, then again I'm a Software bloke.Nice specualtion mate! There are 4 gamecube controller ports as well as 2 gamecube memory card slots on the Revolution already, underneath a flap. Posted May 20, 2005, 9:11 PM ET by James

Reading the interview with Miyamoto, I get the impression that Nintendo's plan is to drop one single bomb shell sometime before the release, instead of trickling them out. I think they might be forced to trickle some out as well as pressure mounts from Sony and MS, but given their aim of creative gaming, perhaps it does make sense that they're maintaining the silence as long as they can and live on hype alone while it lasts. It seems to make sense to me, now that I think about it. Afterall, if you can leave a strong impression few months before the actual release, all the negativity before it becomes somewhat trivial. We're still over a year away from Rev/PS3 releases. Posted May 20, 2005, 10:28 PM ET by sasha

The controler will be two gloves that you put on, and depending on which "virtual console" you are playing on,the controler for it is rendered in full 3d on the screen and the gloves will have sensors all over them, so you can just reach out and you will virtually grab the virtual controler and start playing. and that is trully revolutionary.tnx for listening Posted May 20, 2005, 11:29 PM ET by chandler

sasha: we need feedback on controllers, which is why taht infrared keyboard sucked hard Posted May 21, 2005, 2:39 PM ET by Brian

So far, everything revealed on the Revolution has been done before.1. DVD Player2. Wireless Connectivity3. Backwards Compatibility4. EmulationIs Nintendo pulling the wool over its own eyes? Or is the blind man the only one who can truly see? I still believe... Posted May 22, 2005, 8:03 AM ET by GamerHeaven

I think you've glossed over the truth, or are blind, Brian:1. That's very true.2. Nintendo did that one first, I think you'll find.3. Backwards compatibility, again Nintendo did that first.4. Emulation, the Revolution will be the first console to emulate legally. And even 5. We don't know what new thing the Revolution can do, but this doesn't change the fact that it'll have something new and unique in the control.Tell me what your points were again.Maybe your hatred (?) toward Nintendo has made you blind Brian.
