Ps3 Vs Xbox 360

The Engadget & Joystiq Interview:

Please take our . PS3 vs Xbox 360 Posted May 19, 2005, 1:17 PM ET by Steve Parsons Related entries: , ,

This didnt take long. An article looking at the big street fight coming between Sony and Microsoft over who dominates your living room. It has some blurb regarding the graphical power of the systems. Both systems, graphically, are going to kick the PCs ass for a while. That much is sure. The article also notes that the PS3 controller, lets not mince words here, looks a bit crap. To me, it also looks like people with smaller hands may have a problem using it. Of course, unlike some lucky folk around here, Ive not actually got to see one in the flesh. However, it just doesnt look like a good controller. It looks like some of the crappier efforts that were around in the early 90s. Its a good look at the two consoles. Its not like you have to decide which to buy yet (assuming you dont buy both), but it gives you a good overview.

The extra long arms on the controller are great for people with 9 fingers on each hand. Posted May 19, 2005, 1:36 PM ET by Clint

The controller is probably not the actual controller. They probably don't want to give away all of their plans just yet! Also..I agree with the article. XBox 360 is more like XBox 1.5 and Killzone for PS3 is the best looking FPS in history! Posted May 19, 2005, 1:37 PM ET by

The controller reminds me of the Batman's Batarang. Ugly to say the least, and nothing really inovative, just a case mod to the old PS2 controller. Posted May 19, 2005, 1:47 PM ET by Adam

Was that a journalistic article or a fanboy writing why he's going to buy a PS3? Posted May 19, 2005, 1:51 PM ET by Eric Pobirs

Sony is being somewhat dishonest on one claim. Their quoted floting point performance is for the CPU and GPU combined but on their comparison chart they represent Xbox 360 with the throughput number for the CPU alone. This has been a standard tactic with Cell. They previously compared it to PC processors for functions that most consumers receive from their PC's GPU and not the CPU. Disingeuous, to say the least. Posted May 19, 2005, 1:51 PM ET by Scott

Clint, "Killzone for PS3 is best looking FPS in history!"? Give me a break. Yet another case of Sony bringing the hype. Killzone2 looks very pre-rendered. The Unreal3 demo looked pretty but so did the Unreal3 powered Gears of War for the 360.I'm holding back judgement on the PS3 until I see actual gameplay. So far Sony has just done a repeat of the pre-PS2 hype. Posted May 19, 2005, 1:53 PM ET by Tasandmnm

Wow. All of you who think that based on something that has been proven to be CGI renders outdoes the ACTUAL gameplay seen in some of the 360 titles like GR3, GoW, and Kameo, just amaze and disturb me. Everyone seems to forget the Pre-PS2 tech demos and the promise of Toy Story like in game graphics which were NEVER delivered. I am just amazed at all the sheep who have bought into this (game journalists included), Sony hooked everyone before not to deliver, what has changed since then? I am in no way saying that the PS3 will not bring gmaes to market that are on par with the 360 graphically nor am I doubting how good their hardware is, I am just pointing out that what everyone is gushing over from the Sony Conference is not representative of what will be brought to fruition in game. Sony and it's Dev's sure do know how to make some pretty CGI though, and htey sure know how to pull the wool over everyone's eyes and NOT get called on it. If Microsoft were in Sony's shoes right now they would be getting FLAMED by both gamers and by the gaming media. I am ashamed at Joystiq for linking to this story, and ashamed of everyone who bought Sony's conference. Posted May 19, 2005, 2:02 PM ET by rog27

#4, Actually you are misinformed. The 1 Teraflop quote by Microsoft was for "Total System Throughput", including the GPU as well. So, it is an apples to apples comparison of floating point calculation power between the two consoles. Here are the exact numbers:PS3: 2.18 TeraFLOPS (CPU+GPU performance)XBOX360: 1.15 TeraFLOPS (CPU+GPU performance)You might want to verify things before you claim them. Let's be honest, that was a terrible article lacking any thorough research (thinking Killzone 2 isn't CG anyone?) or semblance of objectivity. The writer clearly buys the PR hype provided by Sony, just take a look at the pictures accompanying the article, supposedly about both consoles. Combine this with statements like "Sony yet again wins out with a more aesthetically alluring console" a sweeping comment about the designs, an area that is completely subjective, and it seems quite clear to me that this is a Sony 'fanboy' who happens to have an undeserved soapbox. Posted May 19, 2005, 2:07 PM ET by rog27

number #6, you're a fucking cunt...just because in reality PS3 is more powerful (to what degree visibly we won't know)...doesn't mean you have to turn into a little girl and cry about this like every other self-righteous Microsoft fascist out there and start criticizing Joystiq who affords you the opportunity to rant in the first place. Let things pan out before you judge...or someone might be saying in the near future, "in your face you pansy ass bitch fanboy" Posted May 19, 2005, 2:09 PM ET by rog27

Isnt that what console launches are about? Hype? Its all about getting peoples attention so you're not watching the other guys. Its about looking at pretty prerendered graphincs on a dev kit that make you go "ooh and ahh" In the end, they are out to make money. The hype is why websites like Joysiq even exist. If all the sudden they just dropped an X360 or PS3 or Revolution on us and said "here, play our new console" that would simply be stupid. The hype is all part of it.May the best console with the best games win.Oh, and to all those out there that bash one console in favor of another.. you're no gamer. Period. Posted May 19, 2005, 2:16 PM ET by C

I was initially wowed by the Sony presentation, but after thinking about it, I'm very skeptical. Sony has a history of promoting games using cut scenes and not actual gameplay footage (ie. Final Fantasy VII on PS1). However, I do think some of the demos were gameplay, but not many, including Killzone. Do people actually think that Fight Night 3 on the PS3 will look much better then the Xbox360 version? I doubt it, I'm sure they'll look the same. As far as a controller, who needs to use 7 of those ugly controllers simultaneously if all of your friends are online. Who needs BluRay when there are no movies out using that format. In fact, last year was the first year that DVD movie sales passed cassette tape movie sales. So, you'll be able to watch Spiderman 2 and a few other movies on BluRay next year or the year after, but most people have already seen it more than once. BluRay and HD-DVD have a long way to go and won't be needed until the generation after next. As far as 1080p output, how many people have or can afford a HDTV that can display 1080p. It will be some time before you can get a 1080p compatable HDTV at a decent screen size (30" or above) for an affordable price. I do want to compliment Sony on not trying to force us to use a memory stick. From these features, it looks as though sony plans to have PS3 on 10 year product cycle instead of 5 before the PS4 comes out. Also, they didn't mention online play at all, so they must not have a stategy. Even nintendo announced an online strategy. What's up with that? Posted May 19, 2005, 2:27 PM ET by Dave C

Your comments: The one thing I don't understand is why Sony persist in placing the left analog stick down there with the D pad taking precedence where your thumb naturally sits. The only reason we need the D-pad so badly on ps2 games is because the analog stick is so rubbish, Burnout3 being analog-only pissed me off so much I had to go buy the Xbox port to play on my mate's system. It was ok when they were obviously tacked on as an afterthought for the psx, and I think I remember reading that sony purposely kept the exact same pad for the ps2 for brand awareness reasons or somesuch, but I'm starting to feel a little cheated, after the amount of (successful) work nintendo put in to their pad design which genuinely enhances the games played on that system (especially how long you can play them for at a stretch!), that sony spend years creating a new console to invade every living room and wow us all with its graphical prowess only to use a controller design effectively unchanged from that first analog psx pad just to pander to the marketing department. It's our only tactile interface with the console! Posted May 19, 2005, 2:28 PM ET by JD

On hype: I think the most foolish thing one can do is fall for the hype, since it invariably leads to disappointment when things change or don't live up to standards people were expecting. That's why it's called hype, and not 'facts'. Posted May 19, 2005, 2:29 PM ET by Tasandmnm

Guess I struck a nerve unintentionally. Hmm. LMAO at #10 and #11. Get your hand out of your bag of Doritos and unhook the Mountain Dew I.V. from your arm and S L O W L Y read over my comments again. I have no biase, I call it like I see it, and I see a lot of journalists/gamers walking around gleefully with a blindfold on that says "FANBOY" across it. Either that or SUCKER. Sony has fooled people before, which as I said in my first post is obviously good marketing since so many people buy into it. If we were playing games with Toy Story like graphics and the Emotion Engine was half of what they claimed, I would be clapping and cheering right now, because that is some damn impressive CGI renders. But that is ALL it is, nothing less, nothing more. Now please repsond in an intelligent manner and refrain from foul name calling, you never know what age people are reading these. Hype or not, Sony sold their system.MS should games that I thought could be done on the Xbox as it is now. Posted May 19, 2005, 2:43 PM ET by

You call that a comparison? THIS is a comparison:&The string of low-IQ articles have led me to this conclusion:Joystiq blows. Posted May 19, 2005, 3:09 PM ET by Sonic_Extreme

For everone here read this article. This shows you how advanced the x360 gpu is. Keep in mind is not even finish nor running on the alpha kits. Here is another one Posted May 19, 2005, 3:15 PM ET by Domino

Anyone else starting to like the design on the PS3 controller? I just hope it is funcional.I am interested in seeing how each company will do with the roles reversed; Sony being more powerful and bigger with controller issues and MS being the first in the market. How can the artical say that the 360 has Tivo functionality when there's no TV input????? Posted May 19, 2005, 3:34 PM ET by Brian

#13, how can you rag on the Sony for including a Blu-ray drive? Yeah, there are no titles out yet, but what about in 3 or 4 years time? Nothing wrong with adding the hardware now for that. And I highly doubt it will add to the consumers' price for the console. I think Sony would be willing to take a hit on that with the intent that the PS3 will help drive future Blu-ray sales of their current and future movie library.People are bitching and moaning about PS3 being able to output 1080p. What the hell is wrong with them future proofing their console and, here's a thought, help drive HDTV adoption? Did everyone forget that Sony is the largest consumer electronics company in the world who also produces HDTVs? This is undoubtedly another tool to help drive HDTV sales and adoption.I'm not saying the PS3 is gonne be better than the 360, but for crying out loud, some of these arguments against the PS3 are pathetic. There is a lot of speculation as to the authenticity of the PS3 trailers. I'd love for Killzone2 to be ingame, but even if it isn't, that clip arguably stole the show and provided a lot of buzz for the PS3 (and lets face it, creating buzz is what E3 is all about, so whether you agree or not, Sony trumped MS in this regard IMO).One clip I am excited about is Vision Gran Turismo. I have little doubt that this isn't actual gameplay footage judging by the graphics level achieved in GT4. I think this should be used, along with Fight Night, to get a better idea of what the PS3 is capable of.That all being said, I'm also excited for the 360. There were some ingame clips that really appealed to me, and I'll probably pick one up for the dorm room next year for me and my roommates. Looks like some solid games coming our way.In the end, I'll probably end up getting both, as I'm sure many will. And please people, is it really that difficult to hold an intelligent discussion and not have it degenerate to FaNboY accusations and crap like that? Here is a somewhat less naive interview by somebody with a little common sense: Posted May 19, 2005, 3:43 PM ET by paintist

Three points:I would rather have Microsoft dominate my computer room and have Sony dominate my living room than to have Microsoft dominate my entire household. If you watched the Sony Conference via Gamespot video look closely at the controller the presenter for Fight Night is using. It looks almost identical to the PS2's controller. Also considering that the PSP and PS3 both have WiFi capabilities I'm gonna assume that you can use that as a controller as well. Plus with the added functionality of bluetooth/wifi/usb there will obviously be alternatives to the boomerang. And lastly the cardinal rule of ALL COMPUTER ELECTRONICS is...its only as good and as powerful as the SOFTWARE you run on it. Hardware is great and powerful but in order to fully utilize its capabilities you have to have powerful software too, otherwise its like putting a granny behind a Ferrari. This whole dick fight of teraflops to gigaflops, Cell cores to Power5 cores is ultimately useless because its the developers that are going to make or break the console wars. Not the community, not the hardware, the game developers. Personally I think the playstation dev community is simply a much better one than Xbox. Posted May 19, 2005, 3:46 PM ET by Bubbles

Everyone, listen: the Killzone 2 trailer was pre-rendered. Jesus, how many times do people have to say it before you hear the truth? You've been snowed by Sony into believing that it is gameplay footage when it ISN'T. The company that did the animation has already been interviewed and confirmed that the clip as pre-rendered. It is outrageously stupid to judge system performance from a pre-rendered cut-scene. Honestly, some of you were born yesterday. And, for god's sake... "Gears of War" is here NOW and looks incredible. And yet you go on yapping about Killzone as if what you saw was game play. That is truly ignorant. What you saw was Sony manipulating expectation. Posted May 19, 2005, 3:52 PM ET by Eric Pobirs

reading these xbox fanboys articles makes me want to never buy an xbox. Sony has done a great job with the press this week. almost all journalists are very high on sony right now because of this. just admit that sony won round one, though the winner is far to be determined. there is an interview with the sony exec out there right now, thats worth a read. i love my xbox and ps2, but I feel like MS isn't going to be giving me as much for the money as sony is at this time. I've been impressed with ms's developer line up for the 360, but they are putting way too much effort on the online portion. It'll be significant, but what % of gamers are actually on-line for consoles? 25% May increase to 50% for the next cycle. Posted May 19, 2005, 3:59 PM ET by Ted

This was E3....not your local video game store. This conference is to wow people. Sony did just that. Can you seriously look at any demo MS pumped out and thought that it was so far from the Xbox's current capabilities that it was worth a new console?Sure I think Sony is not showing actual game footage. Here is a question though: If Sony showed us God of War at the E3 before the PS2 release, would we not cry bullshit then?Sony left us wondering and MS left us wanting more... I hope they release Killzone when Halo comes out! I mean those graphis totally blow away Halo. Halo looks like an Atari 5200 game compared to the new Killzone. Posted May 19, 2005, 4:13 PM ET by Bubbles

Spiker: But everyone expected Sony to win round one. What people did not expect was how well Microsoft did. I mean, c'mon, it would be pretty shocking if Sony had disappointed at E3 given their dominance in the marketplace and the enormity of their corporate presence in the world. But what shocked me was how together MS was. When I looked at the 360 and all those gorgeous face-plates and "Gears of War" and etc., I was truly impressed. I think Microsoft out-designed Sony which I never in a million years would have thought possibly before E3. And they really have their shit together with XBL which I think is far more important to the future of gaming than you seem to. MS did far better than anyone expected. What this means is that MS has a real chance to do very well. Will they catch up to Sony? No. But they could take a huge chunk out of the market. So, Sony DESPERATELY had to do well at E3. I should let you know that I plan to buy both systems, so I'm not fanboy-ing. For me, this is the truth of E3. Posted May 19, 2005, 4:46 PM ET by Sonic_Extreme

People think that what they saw on the demos cannot be done with x360. I'll bet anyone that it can. Just by reading the article they say that the GPU x360 can easily do that with no drop in performance using x4AA. Just that MS knows that for 1080p is so far away so why even mention it. Sony just puts out #'s to WOW people. By reading that article I also states that the Nvidia GPU is almost the next GF70 platform of Nvidia. While the Ati processor is not what ATI has plans for PC's. Its complete different. I think MS has something big later on down the lines. I smell a AMD vs Intel war here.. more power for intel but beaten by a less powerful but more efficient AMD. No one knows till they come out and we see them run the actual game if there are any difference. For me I dought ps3 will trump x360. I think they will be on par. bubbles, i guess MS just didn't wow me much... with the guns they have(gates) i'd hoped they'd blow me away... that's the name of the game... impress people.. they talked way too much about the live component... which everyone knew about allready... I personally think it'll be crazy to be able to play video's off of the ps3 on your psp remotely.. i'd imagine you'd be able to do that off the 360 as well though, unless sony locks it down.. pretty cool stuff down the road.. lets hope this hd-dvd/blue ray thing doesn't get in the way of it. they just announced 100gig blue ray discs(4 layers) how crazy is that. XBOX 360:I am very impressed with how they are expanding XBox Live. Sony has yet to offer something similar, so this is potentially a leg up. It also comes with a hard drive (20 gig)- hope it's a quieter one! Box design is significantly improved over the previous incarnation, and many a consumer should be pleased. Technically, the 360 seems like it has great potential, but Microsoft's showing seemed quite bland overall. Sure, there were a few cool things (Gears of War), but mostly what I've seen are slightly improved versions of the games we're already experiencing on high-end PCs today. It did not have the feeling of a "new era" in gaming. It is very evident that their hardware is a ways from being ready (playable demos running on far less powerful devkits), and what is being shown now is going to pale in comparison to what the future holds. So, when does the future really arrive? Probably not this year. Backwards compatibility? I'm not convinced that you'll be able to just put your old games in your new 360 and go. We knew this was going to be difficult, and if you look at Microsoft's answer, it isn't really clear, which would seem to indicate that it is not going to happen. We'll see...PS3:Okay, this is the future of gaming! Not everything was wonderful, but plenty of the real-time demos and prerendered movies really captured my imagination. Are portions of next-gen games going to have some ray-tracing in them (think incredibly realistic lighting) and are environments going to really come alive? This stuff is just amazing, and this is what I want to experience in the future. In fact, the eventual reality should be significantly better than the demos. Now that is a presentation, and I feel that Sony really understands what the future of gaming is all about. This is important because they're a major publisher.Hardware-wise, the PS3 definitely has a leg up with the Cell processor. The future is intense computations driven by streams of data, and the Cell is far more suited to this task than the 360 CPU. This also looks like a multimedia machine that will continue to provide usefulness in the years ahead. One very significant issue that I think a lot of people are missing is the inclusion of Blu-ray. Sure this is going to help Sony win the next-gen storage format war, but for games this is really key. When some current games (San Andreas) are using the entire two-layer DVD for the PS2 (9 gigs), the storage medium is going to be a huge issue. Blu-ray means a lot more content, and that is a big part of what we're experiencing in the games.Interview with SCEE Phil Harrison:Conclusions:- 360 games are going to look a lot better than what was shown at E3- XBox Live looks very cool- The PS3 is going to be a significantly more powerful machine- Microsoft's lead to market this year may not help them very much because the games don't look really next-gen- Everyone is going to suffer if the markets collapse due to rising energy costs driven by Peak Oil Posted May 19, 2005, 7:50 PM ET by Killfox

Well i have the answer to the killzone theory. Well i just watched G4tv live from E3 and straight from the CEO of sony mouthe was realtime and was using PS3 specs. So the graphics you saw where the graphics your gunna get and could even be better. The only reason it looked like a movie was because they would of had to be using many contollers and they didnt have time to give a tech demo of everything. SO no more descussion on this. The statement that the PS3's GPU will surpass that of PCs for a while is patently false. Good job researching your article thereGiven that the RSX is based off of NVIDIA's G70 architecture, you can expect to have a similar feature set later this year on the PC. In fact, NVIDIA stated that by the time PS3 ships there will be a more powerful GPU available on the desktop. This is in stark contrast to ATI's stance that a number of the features of the Xbox 360 GPU won't make it to the desktop for a matter of years (potentially unified shader architecture), while others will never be seen on the desktop (embedded DRAM?). I don't really see how you people can think that the ps3 will have such better games and more games than the next xbox after the continuing news coming out of e3. Title after title are being announced as either being exclusive to the xbox360 (possibly coming out on pc as well), or coming out on both next gen consoles. I have heard very little news of major ps3 exclusives, and I am sure we would have heard of a lot of major titles if they were out there considering how long it is going to take for these developers to create games for the ps3.As far as the ps3 being more powerful than the xbox 360, I think that is probably true, but it is pretty clear to everyone that has a nuetral stance on the situation that the difference will be pretty light. The PPE in the Cell is very similar to one of the core in the 360, so as for cpu performance, it pretty much comes down to what 7 SPE's will be able to do, or what 2 additional PPE's are going to be able to do. Certain tasks will probably be able to be handled faster on the SPE's, others will be handled faster on the 2 full-fledged Power5 cores. There is no outright winner on the gpu front, either, with the ati processor's unified memory and shader architecture (along with access to more total memory) giving advantages in certain areas and the slightly faster core and slightly faster access to memory giving advantages to the ps3 in other situations. Blu-ray is certainly interesting, but it is far from certain that the gamble that Sony is making by putting this expensive component in their system will pay off. word on the street is that the controller is extremely comfortable to use for long periods of time. Also, the sign behind the controller in many photos of the controller at E3 stating tht it is conceptual, is due to sony being unsure of the reaction the newer controller was going to recieve and therefore placed it there to not confirm its placement if the reaction was bad.i'm all up for a change in controller design. it needs to contain the battery pack and wireless adapter inside so therefor it needs to be slightly altered, and this recent law-suit concerning the dualshock controller has caused sony to rethink its possibilities.I believe if all the fuss is about the look of them, u'll soon grow to like them, if they are comfortable then that definately outways their looks, and finally if u do seriously not like them, buy a different parties controller or jus place the controllers in a nearby draw. From what I understand of processor clock speeds, graphics processing units, and threads, I have realized that the Xbox 360 is far superior to the Playstation 3 in every respect. As a recent former PS fan, I know where you are coming from, but hear me out. The PS3 has eight cells; however, these are not the same as cores. Since they play a virtual game of "tag," each cell needs to catch up with the one in front of it. Now, normally, over a short period of time (let's say, 5 minutes) this "lag" would amount to almost nothing, about 8 milliseconds. However, over a period of 45 minutes, the increase in lag is exponential. These tests are under ideal conditions, by the way. The increase in lag over that much of a period of time will be the equivalent of having only one cell running at 3.17 Ghz. That means that the Xbox 360's 3 independent power cores are triple the processor speed of the PS3. About the amount of running memory (RAM), the Xbox 360 has 512 MB of RAM running at 3.2 Ghz, while the PS3 has about 256 MB of RAM running at the very widely used speed of 700 Mhz, and 256 MB EDRAM used at 3.2 Ghz. So, in effect, the graphics on the PS3 will be twice as good as the PS2's graphics, and the Xbox 360's graphics will be 2.13 times as good as the PS3's, or 4.26 times as good as the PS2's. Also, about the wireless controllers, Sony originally had plans to use eight bluetooth controllers, but the current bluetooth bandwidth spectrum only allowed for the odd number of seven. Since bluetooth cannot RH (randomly hop) to a different channel like the Xbox's controllers, any cell phone made in the last 1 1/2 years will interfere with at least one of the controllers, as almost all of them are bluetooth enabled. This was a crucial mistake on Sony's part. It almost pains me to say that, because I'm a huge fan of Sony, they really do make excellent, high quality products (except for their CD-R's...). After crunching the numbers with my Calculus professor, we concluded that the Xbox 360 will be in all ways superior to the PS3. Also, about the name. The Xbox 360 is so named because they did not want to seem inferior because of people's bias with names: just think, on one hand you have the PS3, and on the other hand you have the Xbox 2. Now which one would you pick based solely on name? Exactly.Update: The interview on www.joystiq.com with Sony's vice president revealed that the Killzone 2 video was pre rendered,as well as all the other videos. I thought so...Update: The Xbox 360 wasn't running at peak performance at E3. Executives confirmed that the Xbox 360 was running at approximately 30% of it's full operating power, while Sony showed us 100%. The Xbox 360's everything will be at least 3 times as good, if not better.Again, I want everyone to remember, I was a playstation fan, until I crunched the numbers, worked out a few equations, and came up with some surprising answers.
